Maya Angelou with Mint Julep - Harlem 2005
Dr. Maya Angelou (1928–2014) was an iconic American writer, poet, and civil rights activist whose influence transcended generations. Commissioned by Parade magazine, I had the honor of photographing Dr. Angelou in her Harlem brownstone.
Upon entering her home, I was immediately captivated by her stunning collection of art, showcasing works by prominent African American artists—a testament to her deep appreciation for culture and history. We spent the afternoon immersed in conversation about art, life, and the human experience.
This intimate moment was captured on my Leica M6 with Tri-X 400 film during a break in the shoot. I always carry a Leica M camera to document behind-the-scenes moments and everyday life. Its compact size is less intimidating than other 35mm cameras, breaking down barriers between photographer and subject. Here, Dr. Angelou sits in her favorite chair, sipping a Mint Julep, sharing stories with the photo team, and offering her unique wisdom. The image captures her wisdom, warmth, and timeless elegance.
